Lutra Island Hoops *Powered by Cocodimama, in conjunction with the Eleuthera Basketball Association, proudly presented the 3rd Annual Cocodimama Basketball camp in the summer of 2024! The camp took place on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10, 2024.
Each year, the focus of the camp is to help develop youth basketball players on the island of Eleuthera, while giving them an chance to showcase their skills in front of veteran coaches. Starting with this annual All-Star Basketball Camp, Lutra Island Hoops is committed to community empowerment and building opportunities through basketball.
This year's two-day clinic was even more exciting than the last, once again featuring the Bahamas' own Romad Dean, now entering his junior year at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. Dean served as camp coach along with Steve Turner of USA Basketball and Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.
Dean and Turner were be joined by veteran coaches from Eleuthera, Freeport, and the U.S. to help create an unforgettable experience for the participants -- talented Eleutheran ball players grades 6th through 12th.

Steve Turner is our Director of Basketball and Player Development. Turner serves as Head Basketball Coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. (2004-05 to present). He was named the head coach for the USA Men's Nike Hoop Summit Team in February 2023 and served as assistant coach for the USA U17 and U16 junior national teams. Turner led the All-Star basketball camp again this year.
Romad Dean is our Assistant Director of Basketball and Player Development. Dean is now entering his third year as a member of the Fordham University Men's Basketball team. He was born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahamas and is a graduate of Crestwood Prep in Toronto, Canada. Dean paired up with Coach Turner again this year to run the basketball camp and focus on player development.
Leah Turner is our Director of Camp Operations. In her first year serving in this role, Leah has helped move the camp forward in terms of organizational effeciency and social media presence. Leah believes whole-heartedly in the vision of Lutra Island Hoops and is committed to advancing the mission of the organization.
Andrew "Tiny" Johnson is a local legend who has been coaching and developing youth basketball players on Harbour Island, Eleuthera, Bahamas. Coach Johnson and his teams have been participating in the Cocodimama Basketball Camp since 2022. Several of his players traveled from Harbour Island to participate in the 3rd Annual Cocodimama Camp in August 2024.
Derek Smith is the Director of the Bahamas Basketball Federation and President of the Eleuthera Basketball Association. He is an educator, entrepreneur, philanthropist, venture capitalist, community builder, and sports enthusiast. Smith has been instrumental in the success of the basketball camp since its inception and will continue to support the work.
Kevin Clarke is the Head Basketball Coach at Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy. He was appointed as the U15 Junior Men's Head Coach for the Bahamas Basketball Federation in March 2024 and has served as an assistant coach for Bahamian national teams for several years. Clarke helped evaluate the basketball players at the camp in the first two years.
People began to take notice as the camp grew in numbers last year! We added more coaches, including Steve Turner of USA Basketball, and Head Varsity Basketball Coach of the nationally ranked Gonzaga College High School. Our first year was exciting! We created something special on the island that had never been done before. The energy on the court was electric! Bahamas native, Romad Dean of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY, was the main attraction. Coach Turner has been coaching basketball his entire adult life, and has spent over 20 years building a nationally-ranked program at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. Gatorade named Coach Turner their first National Coach of the Year in 2017 and featured him in this video.
Romad will help lead the camp again this year. Now entering his junior year at Fordham, University in the Bronx, NY, here are some highlights of his college career so far!
